Rupertus Meldenius, the pen name of Peter Meiderlin (1582–1651), was a German Lutheran theologian and educator. He is most remembered for coining the famous phrase advocating Christian unity: “In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity.” This ideal was expressed in his 1626 tract Paraenesis votiva pro pace ecclesiae (“A Sincere Exhortation for Church Peace”), written in response to the religious divisions of the Reformation and the devastating Thirty Years’ War.
