Matthew Henry (1662–1714) was a renowned English Presbyterian minister, Bible commentator, and writer best known for his widely influential work, Exposition of the Old and New Testaments. Born on October 18, 1662, in Broad Oak, Wales, he was the son of Philip Henry, a respected Puritan preacher. Matthew was educated at home and later studied law before turning to full-time ministry.
In 1687, he began his pastoral ministry in Chester, where he preached and taught for 25 years. Henry’s most famous work, his Bible commentary, provides practical, devotional, and theological insights and remains popular among Christians today for its clarity and spiritual depth. Though he died before completing the New Testament section, others finished it based on his notes.
Matthew Henry passed away on June 22, 1714, but his writings continue to inspire Christians around the world.
