David Wilkerson (1931–2011) was an American Christian evangelist, pastor, and author best known for his work with troubled youth and for founding Teen Challenge, a Christian recovery program for drug addicts. In 1958, he gained national attention through his outreach to gang members in New York City, an experience he chronicled in his bestselling book, The Cross and the Switchblade. Wilkerson later founded Times Square Church in New York City, where he preached a message of repentance and spiritual renewal. His ministry emphasized holiness, faith, and compassion for the marginalized.
