Billy Sunday (1862–1935) was a prominent American evangelist and former professional baseball player known for his dynamic preaching style and significant influence during the early 20th century. Born on November 19, 1862, in Iowa, Sunday grew up in poverty and spent time in an orphanage. He began his career as a professional baseball player in the 1880s, playing for teams such as the Chicago White Stockings (now the Cubs). In the late 1880s, he experienced a religious conversion at the Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago and left baseball to work with the YMCA and later with evangelist J. Wilbur Chapman. By the early 1900s, Billy Sunday became one of America’s most popular revivalists. His preaching was known for its energetic delivery, dramatic gestures, and moral fervor, often condemning alcohol, gambling, and other vices. His campaigns helped fuel the Prohibition movement, and he is credited with converting hundreds of thousands to Christianity. Sunday died on November 6, 1935, leaving a legacy as one of the most influential evangelists of his time.
