Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African pastor, missionary leader, and one of the most influential Christian writers of the 19th century. Born in Graaff-Reinet, South Africa, to Scottish missionary parents, he studied theology in the Netherlands before returning to serve in the Dutch Reformed Church. Murray played a central role in the 1860 revival movement in South Africa, advocating for deeper spiritual life and fervent prayer. Over his lifetime, he authored more than 200 books and pamphlets, many of which—like Abide in Christ, The True Vine, and With Christ in the School of Prayer—are still widely read today. His work emphasizes the indwelling life of Christ, humility, and total surrender to God. Murray’s legacy endures through his timeless writings and his role in shaping Christian thought on prayer and holiness.
